| Construction of large dams with reservoir type storage impound water behind them for seasonal annual, and in some cases for multi-annual storage and regulation of a river. Similarly, tubewells abstract surface and ground water bodies from their natural flow. The impoundment of water by damming and its abstraction through tubewells are common practices in the world and even within the Africa region (WCD, 2000). | En las regiones tropicales se han realizado estudios extensos sobre grupos conspicuos como peces, corales y macroalgas, pero existe poca información comparativa sobre la meiofauna (Gourbault et al., 1995). En Cuba se han publicado varios trabajos sobre abundancia y distribución del meiobentos (Herrera y Del Valle, 1980; Herrera y Sánchez, 1982; Jiménez Ibarzábal, 1982; Herrera, 1983; Herrera y Amador, 1983; Lalana-Rueda y Gosselck, 1986; López-Cánovas, 1987), pero en la década pasada la ausencia de estos es notable.
